Sideways
Just to irk Chirlene more on her birthday (Happy B-day BTW!) I'm now going to rave about another movie I saw this weekend - Sideways. Jen T. came back from Grande Prairie for the long weekend and we had a girl's night out. We bumped into Jenny S. and Starr coming out of "Bad Education" a Mexican film starring the amazingly hot Gael Garcia Bernal (Motorcycle Diaries) as a transvestite. Yet another film I will have to watch eventually!
Anyways, back to Sideways. The basic premise of this film was that these 2 best friends go on a wine tour of California for the week before one of the friends gets married. All their misadventures are hilarious and touching since the 2 men are losers, flawed characters, and have questionable morals. For example, Miles steals money from his mother to fund the wine tour. And Jack's goal for his last week as a bachelor is to get laid as much as possible to test whether he's doing the right thing by getting married.
That's the most interesting part of this film... that both main characters are hardly likeable because of their actions and personalities. Most movies with lead characters that you can't root for don't tend to do well. But for some weird reason, it works in this film. Perhaps because they both grow through a learning process in this week we have more sympathy for them. And perhaps we can identify with the loser qualities in Miles - jaded with the world, failed writer, divorced man still pining after his ex-wife, dealing with rejection on multiple levels, etc.
Sideways is nominated for 5 Oscars next Sunday.
