She's got a ticket to ride
So I've been shopping around for flights to Ghana for me, Bright, and Geoff. The prices for flights went up by an insane amount this year so we're lucky to get anything around $2000. Instead of going to Ethiopia this year, looks like I'll be stopping over in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. It's the cheapest flight and doesn't go through the U.S. (we absolutely cannot go through the U.S.). The tradeoff is the distance... I mean check out a map and see where Dubai is compared to where Accra is!
This is our current itinerary (for me and Bright):
Leave Calgary Sunday May 29 at 10 pm/ Arrive Accra Tuesday May 31 at 12 pm
Calgary to London to Dubai to Accra
(We've got an 8 hour layover in London... hope Bright doesn't need a visa so we can go do some touristy things; notice that it takes 2 days of flying to get to Accra)
Leave Accra Tuesday September 6 at 1:45 pm/ Arrive Calgary Wednesday September 7 at 4:05 pm
Accra to Dubai to Frankfurt to Calgary
(Unfortunately no time to do touristy things in either Dubai or Frankfurt... maybe me and Germany are just not meant to be. Last time I had an 8 hour layover in Frankfurt but was too sick to move)
Total price of trip: $1948.79 including taxes
Now Geoff's flight is a whole other story. We may have to rethink him coming down to visit me during the high season. The same flight will cost him over $2500!

I think BA is the only airline that does a direct flight from London to Accra. KLM also does direct from Amsterdam to Accra but the connection from Calgary goes to Minneapolis.
Unfortunately I can't go through the US because I'll have plant samples with me and don't want to go through US Customs. Plus, Bright is Ghanaian and we're worried about bureacracy.
Don't fly with Alitalia. Horrible service (personal experience).
Hey
Sorry you don't have time to see Dubai. It's a very nice place there and I and a mate of mine is there right now. Guess this means you're not going to Amsterdam =(
