Convocation
The graduation ceremony for my MA degree was today. I skipped my BSc grad in 2003 because I was in Kenya so this was rather exciting for me. I went early so that I could order a grad ring (my first and last grad ring ever - hopefully worth the $400 I put down for it) and to get my gown, etc. I bumped into my friend Dave and a few other people I recognized who were also graduating with various degrees. The only other person from Anthropology to graduate with me was Deng from the socio-cultural side of anth.
After much confusion and redirection we were put into our gowns, had our hoods pinned on, got the hat and tassle going the correct way, and got lined up to march into the Jack Simpson Gym. Geoff, my parents, Geoff's dad Alan, and Bright my Ghanaian brother all showed up to cheer me on! Much appreciated to have someone cheering for me. :)
Speeches were fairly boring, uninspired, and long. Thankfully, reading out the names of the graduands was very efficient. Walking across stage was kind of a blur since I was concentrating on remembering to smile, hold my degree properly, shake hands with the Chancellor, and then look at the camera. It was all over in about 2 hours. I pretty much blanked out for most of the 2 hours. Me and the guy sitting next to me were the only 2 graduates to throw up our hats at the end of the ceremony. :(
*Sigh* Sadly, I have no pictures of the graduation ceremony. My parents have videotape but someone (i.e. Geoff) forgot to bring the camera even after I reminded him. :( Hopefully Bright will send me the pictures he took so that I can post them up on this blog for you to see.

omg! $400 for a grad ring? that's crazy..now i know why i never got one..i can't afford it!
congrats on convocating! good that you could make it this time....like you, i never went to my undergrad convocation, but mostly because i didn't feel like sitting there and listening to people i didn't know call out 500+ names! but i think i'll go to it this time around...more fun since i'll have a bunch of friends (probably) graduating at the same time!
Definitely splurge for your MSc convocation! It will be worth it. I can't afford the ring either... Geoff is indirectly paying for it! :) Actually I could say that picking through 4 benthic samples paid for the ring. So it's not so bad.
