Yehudi's here!
Chuck Mather from the anth dept at the UofC came to BFMS on Friday to drop off Yehudi my field assistant. He's going to be a monkey and climb trees for me to collect leaf samples! Should be lots of fun. We've had several delays in my project because I took a bunch of sick days last week. I don't really want to talk about it because it stresses me out and then I get all anxious. Hopefully this doesn't mean that I will end up using my vacation time with Geoff to finish work.
Yehudi and I haven't started climbing trees just yet because the one person who can teach us how to use the equipment is out with malaria. However we have started getting the ground work taken care of. We met the chiefs of Bonte and Busunya to get permission to work in the forest fragments around BFMS. The chief of Busunya even invited us into their traditional shrine to take a look around. At one point the chief and the fetish priest were arguing because the fetish priest wanted us to pay 50 000 cedis since he had to open up the shrine for us. Good thing we had Tony, the head wildlife officer with us to take care of sticky situations such as this! Yehudi tried apateshie (moonshine 90-proof distilled palm wine) for the first time; fortunately I refused to drink. The stuff is absolutely deadly!
Today after shopping in Nkoranza Yehudi and I will be starting our exercise program to get into shape. We are planning on biking from BFMS to Tankore and back. Once we get started with the data collection in Bonte and Busunya we'll be biking for probably an hour a day + doing work. I'm so glad I'm not the one who also has to climb the tree! It's such a small world - Yehudi and I have discovered we went to the same high school Western Canada and we know some of the same people because Yehudi went to the Calgary Jewish Academy for a few years.

Hi Ev! Wow, glad to hear that you were allowed to take a look at the shrine! Sounds like fun =). So did you end up having to pay anything to see the shrine, or was Tony able to convince them to negate the fee altogether?
Heh, so how did Yehudi like the palm wine? That's crazy that you both went to Western. It definitely is a small world!
Well, I hope you're doing ok! I love you!
Hi babes! Tony made sure we didn't have to pay anything. We were invited after all. Apateshie makes you sweat like crazy and if you have too much you go from drunk to hung-over in 10 mins. I don't know this from experience, just second hand info! :)
I love you too! I'm doing OK. Can't wait till Sept.
