Akwaba from Accra!

I survived my brutal 2 day flying experience from Calgary - London - Dubai - Lagos - Accra. Yikes! I'm so happy to be on solid ground again. I was lucky because people came to pick me up from the airport so I didn't have to haggle with cab drivers, touts, etc. The cab drivers should consider themselves lucky too since I was in a grumpy mood having flown for 2 days with no shower and barely any sleep.

I was so sad to leave Calgary for obvious reasons this trip. My parents were OK with me leaving - after all, they've sent me off 3 times in the past 3 summers. However, Geoff and I were both complete messes at the airport. Couldn't stop crying! For some weird reason, I didn't realize on some level that I would be leaving for 3 months. I half expected the world to stop and I wouldn't have to say "goodbye" and get on the plane. But the world didn't stop and now I'm here in Accra.

Most people in long distance relationships at least have access to a phone. However, at BFMS we don't have phone access and at most I can get to a phone once a week in Nkoranza. It's expensive though. I called Geoff as soon as I got into Accra and a 5 minute phone call with bad connections/reception cost me almost 5 USD. So sad, I can't even imagine not getting to talk to Geoff for the next 3 months. The best we can do is e-mail once a week and letters once every couple of weeks.

Anyways, I'm preparing for the longest 3 months of my life! September can't come fast enough. Miss you and love you lots, babes! Keep those letters coming!

The time will pass more quickly than you think.

But hey, you're not alone... there are military wives out there who deal with no communication and with no certainty whether or not their husbands will live through the latest deployment. Take comfort in that.
