Year-end movie review

As many of you know I love indie flicks and other artsy films. I thought I'd put a plug in for some of this year's best movies. Go out and rent them if you have time. Here's some of the top ones I can remember in no particular order...

1. The Machinist - scary movie starring a freaky skinny Christian Bale. Power tools are a major fear of mine... this movie didn't help. After watching this, post-it notes and hang man games take on a whole new meaning.

2. A Very Long Engagement - French film with Audrey Tautou from Amelie. Details the journey of Mathilde in finding out what happened to her condemned fiancee, a WWI soldier. Does a great job of combining the whimsical happenings of life with the seriousness of war.

3. What Remains of Us - Tibetan-Canadian documentary. See an earlier post that I wrote on this.

4. Silent Waters - an Pakistani film about the change from a liberal government to a fundamentalist Islamic regime in the 1970s and how the change ripped apart families.

5. Still the Children are Here - documentary film about the Garo of NE India. Although many of them still follow traditional beliefs, the encroachment of Christian religion and modern values, plus the necessity of making a living (i.e. working in the coal mines) is quickly eroding their traditional way of life.

6. Motorcycle Diaries - film about the early life of Che Guevara and his best friend Alberto Granado. Documents their motorcycle trip across South America and how their experiences with social injustice, and class and racial problems helps to form their revolutionary ideals.

7. The Story of the Weeping Camel - Mongolian docudrama about a family of herders trying to save a baby all-white camel who was rejected by its mother. See what I wrote about this film under the blog entry about the baby elephant.

OK, so now for some good mainstream movies:

1. The Incredibles - how can you go wrong with Pixar?
2. Finding Neverland - Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet, about the life of James Barrie and his inspiration for writing Peter Pan
3. Super Size Me - such an amazing documentary about fast food culture
4. Shrek 2

Decent mainstream movies:

1. Hidalgo
2. Shall We Dance? The Japanese original is much better than the Richard Gere, JLo version.

Off-the-wall movies:

1. Napoleon Dynamite
2. Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow
