Dragon Boat Festival 2006
To cap off my first year in dragon boat, we participated in the Dragon Boat Festival. Our team sponsor, Topmade, had 8 boats in the races - 3 rec teams, 1 semi-competitive, 1 competitive, 1 womens', 1 mens', and 1 youth. Geoff and I were on 1 of the rec teams named Water Dragons. Most of the team was new and most of us were girls. So we had a bit of a brute force strength disadvantage compared to other teams.
The first day was cold and rainy. Not much fun at all. I decided to help out one of the other rec teams called Ravaging Dragons because they didn't have the minimum number of girls in the boat to race. So my first race of the day was with a different team! Ravaging Dragons did well in that race and placed 2nd. I got out of that boat and got into the boat with my team. I was so tired in that race I had to pull out a couple times towards the end. Luckily I was sitting in the back anyway so it didn't matter as much.
No matter how hard we tried, or what the water conditions were, or whether our timing was on or off, we couldn't seem to do much better than 2 mins and 30 seconds in our races. It was not an overly good time since we have been training for a few months now.
The second day started out cold but quickly warmed up. We were baking by the end of the day! I hadn't really recovered from the 3 races on Saturday so I spent most of the time napping to conserve energy for the final race. My team made it to the B division where we settled for 5 place in the consolation final. Not an overly impressive finish but we still had a lot of fun!
Overall a good experience and I will stay in for next year's season if we are still in Calgary. I hope to put together a rec team with friends. We just need 20 people to make the team so if you're interested let me know!
