Dinosaur Provincial Park

The hiking group met up for another cool hike, this time in Dinosaur Provincial Park near Brooks. It was a fairly long drive (about 2.5 hours) so we had to wake up brutally early to get there. Geoff and I woke up at 5 am to start picking people up! Didn't help that I didn't get any sleep the night before for some strange reason. However, Jenny definitely got the trooper award because she had her wisdom teeth taken out 2 days before the hike!

We drove to Brooks and stopped for breakfast at McDonald's. No better way to start out a hike than with grease in your body! I guess that gives you motivation to hike hard and work off all the junk food! Justin picked up a Hummer along the way too (see pictures).

I love the badlands of Alberta. It's one of my favourite parts of the province. You drive along and all you see is farmers' fields and prairie. Then all of a sudden the badlands appear out of nowhere it seems! It's just so beautiful!

We made it to Dinosaur right on time and met up with Brian my friend from the Kula Ring at the UofC. Now that he's done his primatology degree he found some work as an interpretive guide at Dinosaur. I promised I would go out and visit... and I kept that promise!

We did the Camels' End Coulee Hike through the natural preserve of the park. It was a 2.5 hour following the riverbed as much as possible. Some parts were too muddy and mucky and we had to walk along the river banks instead. It was a beautiful, hot and dry day in the badlands! We learned about the ecology of the badlands, got some awesome photos, and had a great time.

After lunch, we went back to the interpretive center to watch Brian doing his "Dinosaur Family Feud" program for the kids. It was very cute! I coerced Geoff into wearing the t-rex costume just for kicks.

We drove back to Calgary, had Peter's Drive-in for dinner and called it a night. I was so exhausted but I had such a great time on the hike!
