T minus 7 months to Ghana 2005
Hey all,
This is my very first post! Basically, I'll be using this blog as my online journal of my world travels so I won't clutter up your e-mail boxes. I'll also remember not to post anything that can be used against me, especially by family members. All the "good" bits (i.e. the whole shrine visit in Ghana) I'll be sure to send to your e-mail.
I'm about 7 months away from my return visit to Ghana. I can't wait! I'm already dreaming of fufu, okra stew, groundnut soup, ampesi and palava sauce, and Star beer, etc. More details about my project on the monkeys will follow soon.
Donations of books and food (anything canned, dried, packaged sauces, chocolate) are welcome and gratefully accepted. There's also an open invitation for everyone I know to come to Boabeng-Fiema Monkey Sanctuary, Ghana between June and Sept 2005. Please come visit me! Save me from insanity and loneliness! Your stay at the 5-star guest lodge will include:

But I can guarantee you will have a wonderful time! And the mona monkeys and black-and-white colobus are worth it! I think I've convinced Geoff to come visit me for at least 2 weeks (to cook and clean for me, not to mention climbing trees). I gave him an ultimatum, if he doesn't show I'm going to find a Ghanaian boyfriend to replace him with!
Hopefully I will post some pics from my summer trip (Ghana, Burkina Faso, Mali) for my non-Calgarian friends to see what I was up to.

Hola,
I can't believe you have been to Ghana, that is FANTASTIC!!! I have heard nothing but great stories about you so I am really excited to meet you! I am curious though, what is fufu? And what kinds of monkeys? Not that I know many types, but I know in Northern Honshu in Japan we have snow monkeys. They like to hang out in the hot springs with people and what not. Ahhh good family bathing fun. Anyway, I hope all is well, and I think you should make Geoff make you some truffles or B&C chocolate eggs, definitely my fav. Seriously good. I think he got the cooking skills in the family. Damn first borns, always stealing the good stuff.
Smiles
Heather
Hey Heather,
Yep, Geoff is a pretty good chef. We'll have to make our speciality dish for you - couscous stuffed peppers when you're back in Calgary. Albeit, our list of recipes is really short (1 of 3 main dishes!) :)
Snow monkeys are so cool! I love their red eyelids. We have black-and-white colobus (slow but gorgeous) and mona monkeys (fast and cute) at BFMS. Hopefully I will post some pictures soon so everyone can see what they look like.
Hey, I'm a first born too. We usually blame the younger ones for getting it easy and escaping from the parent's disciplining.
Fufu is mashed up cassava (manioc) and plantain. They make it into some doughy lump by pounding it for hours. Then they serve it with some stew, chicken sauce, or peanut sauce. It's good in small quantities, too much of the stuff and you'll want to kill yourself! j/k
Ack! Another first born!!! Just kidding. I googled Mona monkeys and they are SO CUTE!!! Seriously! Interesting about their fur pattern though. I would think that the white on their bellies would give them away in their natural habitats. Anyway, I had no idea you replied to my comment! I came back to your blog to read more Ghana tales and the time in between. Anyway, email me sometime, I can give you the good stories about Geoff that my parents are too nice to say. Just kidding. But here is my address: htanaka@gmail.com
I look forward to the stuffed peppers! Oh and did you read about the hobbit sized people found in Indonesian...well the remains. Check out this article:
